Environment Sensing Development Board RIOT-001 from RICOH to Test and Develop IoT Edge Devices

RIOT-001 Environment Sensing Development Board

Ricoh Electronic Devices Company has introduced an environment sensing board, RIOT-001 that can be used in demonstration experiments of IoT devices. The board monitors ambient temperature, humidity, air pressure, and brightness. The information that RIOT-001 transmits with its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) once per five seconds can be displayed on smartphones/tablets where an application programmed for the RIOT-001 is installed.

The newly introduced sensing board contains ultra-low supply current and low noise power management ICs from Ricoh that achieve independent power generation and prolongation of battery operating time. The board can also charge its secondary battery from a solar battery using the R1800 DC/DC buck converter IC. The IC performs energy harvesting and has a maximum power point control function to optimize the amount of power generation from the solar battery.

The sensing board also includes the RP124 voltage regulator with a battery monitor for monitoring the secondary battery voltage. Moreover, by transmitting battery information to tablets or other smart devices through an AD converter inside the BLE module, it is possible to check the state of the secondary battery voltage.

The RIOT-C01 which is a coin battery board is designed for RIOT-001. By using a CR2032-type battery, the RIOT-001 can continue its sensing operation for 1.5 years (a theoretical value). Before the users start using the RIOT-001, they must ensure that the secondary battery on it is completely charged. The RIOT-C01 can omit the time to wait for the battery to be charged and therefore let you use the RIOT-001 as soon as you get it. It is easy to connect the two boards with the help of a pair of connectors mounted on them. For more details on the RIOT Environmental Sensing board, you can follow the link to its official website.
